What does a TypeScript developer cost per hour?
A senior TypeScript developer in the Netherlands charges roughly 70 to 125 euro per hour excluding VAT. The rate tells half the story. A developer who sets up the types well saves you hours later on chasing bugs that would otherwise only surface in production. For a clearly bounded piece of work we prefer to agree a fixed price, so you know in advance what you are in for.
What is the difference between TypeScript and JavaScript?
TypeScript is JavaScript with types added. You state what a function expects and returns, and the editor warns you while you write when something does not fit. What runs in the browser and on the server is still plain JavaScript, so your users notice nothing. The difference shows in maintenance: in a codebase of a few thousand lines, TypeScript tells you straight away which places a change touches. We build our frontends and Node.js backends with it, so one developer can work on both sides.
Can you move an existing JavaScript project to TypeScript?
Yes, and it does not have to happen in one go. TypeScript and JavaScript can live side by side in the same project, so we convert file by file, starting with the code that changes most often. The app keeps running in the meantime and every step goes live on its own. Within the first weeks you notice that a change breaks something else less often.
What should I look for in a senior TypeScript developer?
How they handle types when it gets hard. A senior developer does not switch off type checking to keep the compiler quiet, checks data that comes in from outside, such as an API response or a form, and keeps the types simple enough that a colleague still understands them a year from now. In an interview, ask about a bug TypeScript did not catch and how it was found anyway: the answer tells you more than a technical test.
Should I hire a TypeScript agency or a freelancer?
A freelancer is often available sooner, but when they fall ill or leave, the knowledge of your code leaves with them. With us you work with a fixed team that reads each other's code, so there is always someone who knows your project. You still talk directly with the developer who writes the code, with no account manager in between. The code lives in your own repository and we work remotely by default, through Slack or Teams.
