Frequently Asked Questions

What does a PHP developer cost per hour?

A senior PHP developer in the Netherlands charges roughly 70 to 125 euro per hour excluding VAT. With PHP the rate says less than the version the application runs on: a project stuck on an old PHP version or an old Laravel release no longer gets security updates, and the upgrade is often the first piece of work. So ask what the upgrade path costs, not only the hourly rate. For a clearly bounded piece of work we prefer to agree a fixed price, so you know in advance what you are in for.

Is hiring a PHP developer worth it for a small business?

Often yes, because a small business rarely needs a full-time developer for a PHP application. What it does need is someone who installs the security updates, fixes what breaks and adds a feature now and then. Hiring for that is usually cheaper than an employee who has too little to do half the time. Make sure the code lives in your own repository and the developer writes down how the application runs, so you are never dependent on one person.

What should I look for in a senior PHP developer?

At how they deal with code they did not write themselves, because that is most PHP work. A senior PHP developer reads an old application before changing it, adds tests around the part they are about to touch, and knows what changed between PHP versions. In an interview, ask about an upgrade they did and what broke along the way: the answer tells you more than a technical test.

Can a PHP developer work for us remotely?

Yes, and with us that is the default: short lines through Slack or Teams and regular updates, with the code in your own repository. You speak directly with the developer who writes the code, with no account manager relaying it. Our process runs entirely on AI, with a human checking every line before it goes live. Would you rather sit at the table, that works too: our studio is at Hofplein in Rotterdam.

Should we move our PHP application to microservices?

Usually not all at once. A working PHP application that you split into microservices in one go costs months and gives your users nothing in the meantime. What works better is lifting out one part that really gets in the way, such as a heavy import or an integration that has to scale on its own, and building it as a separate service next to the existing application. That way the PHP application keeps running, and you only move what earns its move.
