Frequently Asked Questions

What does a DevOps engineer do?

A DevOps engineer makes sure code gets from a developer's laptop to production reliably and often. In practice that means building the pipeline that tests and deploys every change automatically, packaging applications in containers so they run the same everywhere, setting up servers and cloud environments as code, and putting monitoring in place so a problem shows up before a customer reports it. The goal is that a release becomes routine instead of an evening with everyone on standby.

What does a DevOps engineer earn?

An employed DevOps engineer in the Netherlands earns roughly 4,500 to 7,500 euro gross per month, depending on experience and how much cloud and security responsibility comes with the role. A freelance DevOps engineer charges roughly 80 to 125 euro per hour excluding VAT. For many teams the work comes in bursts: setting up the pipeline and the infrastructure is a few weeks of work, after which a few days a month is enough to keep it running. Hiring someone for exactly that is often cheaper than a permanent role.

What does the abbreviation DevOps stand for?

DevOps is a contraction of development and operations. It stands for the idea that the people who build software and the people who keep it running work as one team, with shared responsibility for getting changes live safely. The term dates from around 2009 and has since become the standard way of working in most software teams.

What is the difference between DevOps and agile?

Agile is about how a team builds software: in short cycles, delivering small pieces and adjusting along the way. DevOps is about how that software reaches production and keeps running: automated testing, automated deployment and monitoring. They complement each other. Agile without DevOps produces a working feature every two weeks that then waits for a release; DevOps makes sure it can actually go live the same day.

What are DevOps teams?

A DevOps team is a team that both builds and runs its own software, instead of handing it over to a separate operations department. The same people write the code, set up the pipeline and get the alert when something breaks at night. That makes them build differently: whoever gets called out of bed for a bad release puts more effort into tests and monitoring. In smaller organisations there is often no separate DevOps team at all, and one engineer sets up the pipeline and infrastructure for the developers.
