What does a backend developer actually do?
A backend developer builds the layer your customer never sees: the database, the connections to other systems and the security underneath. Concretely that means the data model everything is recorded in, the API your app or website pulls its data from, the connections to outside parties such as a payment provider or an accounting package, and the question of what happens when one of those parties goes down for an hour. Where a frontend developer decides how something looks, a backend developer decides whether it is correct and whether it holds up. In smaller teams one full-stack developer does both.
What does it cost to hire a backend developer?
A senior backend developer in the Netherlands charges roughly 70 to 125 euro per hour excluding VAT. With backend work the price difference rarely sits in the building itself: an API stands up quickly. It sits in the systems you have no control over. An integration with a party that has good documentation and offers a test environment costs a few days; the same integration with a party that only has a PDF from 2019 costs weeks. So do not only ask what the building costs, but also what has been agreed about the integrations that are not working yet on the day you sign.
Which language do you build a backend in?
Python, Node.js or Go, and which one it becomes depends on what stands around it. We reach for Python when data or AI is involved, or when Django's ready-made admin and permissions give a short path to launch. Node.js is the obvious choice when the frontend is already TypeScript, because then frontend and backend share one language and often the same code. We pick Go when a service has to handle many simultaneous connections and use memory predictably. We do not pick the language we enjoy most, but the one your team can still maintain in two years.
How do I know my backend can handle growth?
You only know once someone measures it, and that is almost always the first step. In practice a backend rarely falls over because of visitor numbers, but because of one query that works fine on ten records and locks the database on a hundred thousand, or an integration that fires a separate request per user. Those are things you find in an afternoon if you know where to look. We measure where the time goes first and change something only after that, because the place everyone assumes the problem is usually is not it.
Can you take over an existing backend?
That is often how a project starts here. A backend nobody owns any more has recognisable symptoms: a database schema no one dares to migrate, credentials living in the repository, an integration that has been failing silently for months because the errors go nowhere. Our first week is spent making the thing observable, so that failures become visible instead of assumed, and only then do we touch the code. What you get out of that week is an ordered list: what is a security risk today, what breaks the moment the volume doubles, and what is merely ugly and can stay exactly as it is.
How does 010 Coding Collective work on backends?
We build backends in Python, Node.js and Go, usually with a React frontend in front, and the work goes out as a whole: design, build, review and maintenance. Our process runs entirely on AI, with a human checking every line before it goes live, and on backend work that is the difference: a model happily writes a query that looks fine and fetches the entire table on every page. Backend work also does not end at launch, so we stay on it: monitoring, upgrades and the phone call when something goes down at eleven at night.
