The short answer
Lovable is an AI tool that builds a web application from a description you type into a chat. You write something like “a booking system for my hair salon, with a calendar and a customer login”, and Lovable produces the screens, the code and the database connection. A few minutes later you have an app you can click through, change and publish.
Lovable is based in Stockholm and started out as the open-source project GPT Engineer. It was renamed Lovable at the end of 2024 and quickly became one of the best-known vibe coding tools. It is built for people who don’t write code: founders, product managers, marketers and anyone with an idea they want to try.
How Lovable works
The screen has a chat on the left and a live preview of your app on the right. You ask for every change in plain language, and Lovable updates the code and refreshes the preview.
Describe
You explain what the app should do, who it is for and how it should look. A sketch or a screenshot works too. The more specific you are, the better the first version.
Generate
Lovable writes the app in React and TypeScript, styled with Tailwind. That is a common, modern setup any developer can pick up later.
Data and logins
For a database, user accounts and file storage, Lovable connects to Supabase or to its own cloud. That is how your app stores information and knows who is signed in.
Refine
You click on part of the preview and say what should change. Small things like text and colours have a visual editor.
Publish
One click puts the app online at its own address, and paid plans let you use your own domain. You can sync the code to GitHub.
That GitHub sync matters more than it looks. The code belongs to you and lives somewhere a developer can open it, so the app can grow beyond the tool that made it.
How much does Lovable cost?
Lovable runs on credits: each chat message uses one or more, depending on the size of the change. The free plan gives you a small number of messages per day, which is enough to learn the tool. Paid plans start at around $25 a month and add more credits, private projects and a custom domain. Teams and businesses have larger plans. Check Lovable’s website for current pricing.
Budget for more credits than you expect. Building is fast, fixing costs messages, and a bug that keeps coming back can eat a large part of a month’s allowance.
What Lovable is good at, and where it gets harder
Lovable shines on the first version of an idea. It gets harder as the app has to do more and more people depend on it.
| Strong at | Harder with | |
|---|---|---|
| Type of app | Prototypes, internal tools, dashboards, landing pages and a first version of a SaaS idea. | Apps with complex business rules, many roles and permissions, or integrations with older systems. |
| Speed | From idea to clickable app in hours, without a developer. | Every new feature touches more existing code, and the AI keeps less of it in view. |
| Data | Test data and a small group of users you know. | Personal data, payments and anything covered by privacy law such as GDPR. |
| Running it | An app you run yourself, where an outage costs little. | An app customers rely on, with updates, backups and monitoring. |

Where it goes wrong: from prototype to production
A Lovable app looks finished, and that is the risk. The preview shows you the interface. It can’t show you whether the data behind it is protected.
In 2025, hundreds of apps built with Lovable turned out to have databases anyone could read, because the access rules in Supabase were missing or far too loose.
Lovable has since added a built-in security scan, and it catches part of the problem. A scan doesn’t know your app’s rules, though. It can’t tell that a customer may only see their own bookings, or that a discount must never go above 100 percent. That kind of logic is checked by reading the code.
These are the issues we run into most often in Lovable apps:
Database access rules
The rules that decide who can read and change which rows are missing or let too much through.
Secrets in the front end
API keys and passwords sit in code that runs in the browser, where any visitor can find them.
Logic that only lives in the browser
Prices, permissions and limits are checked in the interface. Anyone who pokes at the app can get around them.
No tests and no backups
Nothing notices when a new change breaks an old feature, and there is no plan for lost data.
All four can be fixed without rebuilding the app. The time to fix them is when real customers, real data or real money enter the picture, and that is when a developer reads the code. Making a vibe-coded app production ready walks through what that involves.
Conclusion: the fastest start, with a review before launch
Lovable turns an idea into a working app you can show people in an afternoon. For a prototype, a pitch or an internal tool, that is all you need. If the app is going to customers, you want to know what is in the code before someone else finds out.
Lovable = build fast
A first version, a test with real users, a demo for investors. That is what it is made for.
Review = launch safely
Database, permissions, secrets and payments checked by someone who reads the code, before customers sign up.
